Setting:
Doc Morgan, a young doctor from Missouri, founded the
frontier town of West Oakes on 160 acres he claimed
in the Sac and Fox Land run on September 22, 1892. As
the town thrived, he became a man of many hats serving
as local doctor, farmer, town founder, proprietor, post
master, mayor, sheriff, and even veterinarian.
Ever championing the town’s
growth, quite a stir was generated when news is received
five years later that the railroad is plotted to go
through West Oakes. All is well until farmer Bartley
Wilkes holds things up by refusing to sell an easement
across his prime farmland.
When the railroad begins
negotiations with other landowners to reroute the tracks
through nearby Daviesville, Doc Morgan scrambles to
call a town meeting to unveil a plan to save the railroad
deal for West Oakes.
This plan requires relocating the town to the other
end of the Morgan property but hardware store owner
Jack Ace and his miracle mule Macie can do that job.
So what is the hitch in the get along? The new route
cuts through the land of social outcast Shady Sadie
Clemons and her price for the favor is a prominent place
on Main Street to open the Sundown Saloon for her and
her “working girls”.
Will the prim and proper
folks of West Oakes accept the deal? Or are the town
folk sitting down to their last town meal?
